IMPORTANT | OBSC1 Voting Process

OBSC1 Members:

As a result of COVID-19, the board held a simultaneous in-person and Zoom Fall Membership Meeting on October 9, 2021. As discussed, we have again engaged the Club's Independent Auditors, the Offices of John Geantasio CPA LLC, to collect and tabulate votes and to report on results. In order to execute your confidential vote for five (5) Trustees and the 2022 budget, follow the instructions on the enclosed Ballot below. All votes must be cast no later than Friday, November 12, 2021 at 5pm ET. Summaries, as provided by each candidate, are included below for your review.

We have accomplished a lot together over the past few years, with enhanced communications, plenty of entertainment, a COVID-safe environment within our community, record-breaking rentals and a new, improved look with our paved roads. And, of course, continued to foster the great sense of community with our lovely beach and bay and our exceptional group of lifeguards, badge checkers and other staff members.

The Board of Trustees is a volunteer group that has been serving the community for 75 years. We would ask that you vote for up to five Trustees from the candidate list provided and/or nominate a write-in candidate(s).

We look forward to a busy winter preparing for the 2022 season!

Candidate Summaries

DON BESHADA
My wife Allison and I have owned a home in OB1 since 2007. I have 3 girls - ages 22, 20 and 18, all of whom worked for the association as badge checkers when they were younger. I’m an attorney by trade, and serve as outside general counsel to 7 companies, focused primarily on brand building and corporate governance. I’m also a partner in a fitness technology company, and a class action administration company. My family spends most of the summer at our home in OB1, and live the rest of the year in Pompton Plains, NJ.

JEFF CONGER
I have been a member of OBSC1 for 23 years and have served as a Trustee for almost 10 years. As Trustee, I have had the responsibility of overseeing the Bay Beach along with helping the other Trustees whenever needed. I have enjoyed working with the Board members as I believe we all have the Club Members best interest in mind when making some complicated decisions. Now retired I am a full time resident.

GREG GERE
I have been Lagoon Chairman for 18 years, and my shore residence is ideally located to allow me to keep an eye on the Lagoon Mariner. My family has been Club members since 1986. I owned a auto body/ mechanical business for 38 years. I have been the first stop for OBSC #1 boaters who need, I usually help or offer good advice.

MATTHEW HELFANT
Dr. Matthew Helfant started working at Hasbrouck Heights in 2011 as Director of Special Services. In 2014 he was appointed Assistant Superintendent and in 2015 he became the Superintendent of Schools. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Rutgers University. He furthered his education with a Master’s Degree from Montclair State University and continued on to earn a Doctoral Degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dr. Helfant in his sixth year as Superintendent of Schools. He is married to Jeanne Helfant and has two children, Matthew and Brooke. He has owned a home in Ocean Beach 1 for six years.

KEN HOFFMAN
I was asked to serve on the Board of Trustees to fill a vacancy. I recently retired from Seton Hall University as Professor Emeritus after teaching 47 years in the Department of Communication and founded one of the first computer graphics laboratories in higher education funded by the state of New Jersey. I authored a college level textbook on the subject and taught and designed courses in computer graphics, multimedia, animation and still photography. I served as an Army Lieutenant in Vietnam where I was in charge of a motion picture news team for the Department of Defense, Office of Public Information. I have served on many committees during my academic career and have been active in neighborhood and community organizations including the Morristown Historic Preservation Commission and as chairman of the rebuilding committee for an historic church in Morristown that was destroyed by arson. Our home in Ocean Beach Unit One has been in the family since 1947.

JEFF MUCHA
I have been on the Board of Ocean Beach Surf Club as the Recording Secretary since 2012 and my family has been members of the Club since 2009, over 12 years. I have always tried to do what is best for the club as a whole and look forward to continuing on the Board, possible in other areas of importance. I am a Certified Public Accountant licensed by the State of New Jersey and have been employed as a Senior Manager for a New Jersey CPA firm for the past 30+ years.

WILLIAM G. PARRETT
I have been the President of OBSC for the past few years, serving on the board now for about 5 years. My wife Diane and I have owned a house in OBSC #1 since 1986, after renting each year from 1976. We have six children and 10 grandchildren all of whom have grown up at our shore. I am a Certified Public Accountant and have practiced for over 50 years. I have served on a number of Not-for-Profits, including being Chairman of the United Way of America, and currently serve on the Board of Trustees of the NY Foundation for Senior Citizens providing Affordable Housing, Support Services, and Home Sharing in all five boroughs.

MICHAEL SPEKHARDT
I have offered my time to my hometown in various capacities such as Planning Boards, Public Library Trustee, Township Council and Mayor in previous years. I have served as Treasurer of the Westfield Athletic Club and have recently completed seven years of service on the Sussex County College Board of Trustees holding the elected position of Treasurer. Due to my recent move I am no longer a resident of Sussex County and cannot continue to serve at the college. I now have free time to help the HOA that we have enjoyed for almost twenty years now.
